In this ASA Aging Today article from May-June 2016, Terry Fulmer and Nora OBrien-Suric, President and Senior Program Officer at The John A. Hartford Foundation, respectively, forcefully assert that the time has come to push forward momentum around integrating the often siloed worlds of medical care and social services. 

The health care sector has long acknowledged that unmet social needs directly contribute to worse health outcomes, but efforts to practically bridge the gap between clinical providers and those that can impact those social needs have historically fallen short. Fulmer and Obrien-Suric argue that now is the time to accelerate, optimize, and disseminate models of integrated care that improve outcomes and save money. They highlight the Aging and Disability Business Institute (which is supported by The John A. Hartford Foundation) as the primary vehicle through which to accomplish this goal, outlining the initiative’s major goals and mission.
